   1980年代後半のNIEsやASEAN諸国の高成長に見られるように、アジア経済は世界のどの地域よりも高い成長を維持してきた。1997年に通貨・金融危機に見舞われ、その成長にブレーキがかかったものの、V字型回復により、再び世界の成長センターとしての存在感を高めており、21世紀は「アジアの時代」ともいわれている。
   しかしながら、その発展の影には、環境や資源、飢餓と貧困、開発と女性、人口問題など一国の枠内や国家を中心とした観点からでは解決することが困難な多くの地球規模の課題を抱えていることも事実である。
   本会議は、こうした地球規模の課題について、アジア地域の先駆的な研究・高等教育機関を代表する研究者並びに国際機関・自治体・NGO関係者などが集い、課題解決に向けた討議を通じて政策提言を行うことにより、アジア地域ひいては世界の均衡ある発展に資するものである。
